What is an RMD?

A required minimum distribution (RMD) is the amount the IRS requires you to withdraw from tax-deferred retirement accounts each year once you reach age 73. This tool estimates yours.

  • Enter your account balance as of December 31 last year, plus your age.
  • We divide that balance by the IRS life-expectancy factor for your age to get the year’s RMD.
  • Uses the Uniform Lifetime Table — or the Joint Life and Last Survivor Table when your spouse is your sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger.
Example: a $500,000 balance at age 73 (factor 26.5) gives an RMD of about $18,868.

Estimates only, based on the 2024 IRS tables. Inherited IRAs and post-2019 rules may differ. Not tax advice — confirm your figure with a tax advisor.
